Liverpool schools first to trial lessons in suicide prevention

Mike was invited by Mel Barham of Granada Reports to visit The Holy Family Catholic High School in Thornton, Liverpool. He witnessed first hand Suicide Prevention being taught to Year 10 pupils.

This is a trial being run by Liverpool John Moores University across the North West of England as part of their Multi Modal Approach to Preventing Suicide in Schools (MAPSS) lead by Dr Emma Ashworth and Dr Pooja Saini who were also in attendance.

The lessons were taken by Joanna Johnson who is the Training Manager of the charity Grassroots Suicide Prevention. Mike said it was good to hear the kids talk so passionately and with so much understanding of why they should undertake this training. Take a look at Mel’s video to hear what the young people had to say.

It just underlines the fact that Suicide Prevention needs to be a compulsory part of the RSHE curriculum to save precious young lives.

A huge thank you to Mel and Granada for raising such awareness by producing another brilliant piece.
