3 Dads Walking 2024 Day 16 - Yokefleet to Hull

We started the day at the end of a lane on the bank of the River Ouse south of Yokefleet, miles away from any significant centres of populations. We didn’t expect to see anyone other than Emma Webb (who was walking with us for her fourth day) however the road end was abuzz with people! Anna & Tony Brown (co-founders of PAPYRUS), more suicide bereaved parents and Jackie & John from Reckitts in Hull.

A surprising number of people joined us at 7.30am!

Our merry band set of along the flood defence wall, chatting amiably, sharing stories and enjoying walking on the short grass on top of the wall. We covered the ground quickly and enjoyed a welcome break at the Brough Fire Station were the firefighters had the kettle on.

On reaching North Ferriby our day took an unexpected turn; the high tide meant that we couldn’t take the direct route along the shoreline (shouldn’t we have accounted for this when planning the route?). We had to divert inland which added miles to our route...we weren’t happy; however Sue, one of the crew that had walked with us from Yokefleet, announced that the diversion would take us past her house so we could call in for tea....we were mightily relieved.

Onwards again, this time joined by Carla from Radio Humberside as well as supporters from earlier. Carla interviewed us as we walked for a piece that will go out tomorrow (May 3rd).

After going under the Humber Bridge the last few mikes into Hull were tough, not only were we back on tarmac again, we were also walking the ‘extra’ miles that the diversion had generated.

We were finally welcomed to our finish near the Victoria Pier by an enthusiastic team from PAPYRUS accompanied by yet more suicide bereaved parents. Suicide is EVERYWHERE – we need to get talking about it to prevent future suicides.
